• The Incredible Shrinking Shine

I’m sure most of you know about a little group project (organized by the ever more fabulous, but still skinny bitch, LiLu) called In It To Gym It. If you don’t, click the link.

Basically, a bunch of us feel pretty out of shape and awfully alone about the whole thing. So we’re trying to support and motivate each other via blog. Since, ya know, most of us don’t live in the same city.

Much as I hate to do this, you can read my first post on In It To Gym It here. And then I don’t want to hear anything about it, mkay? I feel about as vulnerable posting that sort of thing as I did posting my Violence Unsilenced post. When you think about that, it’s kind of sad.

So here’s the plan. Just so you bitches can hold me accountable. We’re all going to Vegas in May, and I? Would like to not feel like hiding the whole time I’m there. I hate that it’s something we so easily judge others for, but we do. And right now, I’m feeling really yuck about nearly everything in my life. So my weight is going to come off. Starting now.

    Well, starting yesterday, really.

I’m doing Jillian Michaels’s 30-Day Shred. Everyday. No, not five or six days a week. EVERYDAY. For at least 30 days. I started yesterday, and let me tell you…I’ve never cursed at anyone as much as I cursed at Jillian. I think she likes it. (I’m going to write up a post about my workout yesterday at In It To Gym It. I’ll post a link on my Twitter, if you want to follow along. Or you can just read it yourself, here!)

The other part of the plan is that, for the month of April, I’m going vegan. Yes, VEGAN. Now, don’t worry. This is not going to suddenly cause me to care about cows and stuff. I’m not going to start preaching to you about the junk you put in your mouth (TWSS). I just want to see how my body will feel if I stop feeding it so much crap.

I’m hoping that this will at least break me of my greasy food habit, as it’s hard to eat greasy vegetables. I know for a fact that red meat and pork hurt my stomach. I was eating a primarily pescatarian diet for a while, and I felt so much better.

I know what you’re thinking. Why don’t I just go vegetarian? And the answer, my friends, is CHEESE. And dairy products in general. I want to see how my body feels if I cut out the dairy. And I want to stop myself from eating cheese with everything. This will also make baked goods a serious problem. Because I’ve never met a baked good without eggs.

Since the goal is to lose weight, I chose to try something that I felt would assist me in my goal. And it’s only for a month. After the month is over, depending on how I feel, I will probably slowly add fish (possibly chicken) and dairy back into my diet. But hopefully the dairy will be in smaller doses.

If any of you guys are vegan and have any great recipes or tips to share, I would love to hear from you! Drop me a line at shine [at] ishineoutloud [dot] com.

I know exactly what you mean about the dairy. The other night for dinner I had cheese cubes, yogurt and a glass of milk. Dairy overload.

Good luck with this!!! I want to hear how it’s working out for you!!! You’ll do great!!!

  2. Travis says:

Geez. One thing I can tell you is be SLOW on the add back.

I went on the cabbage soup diet last week, and yesterday I had turkey bacon.

    I shit out my soul.

    So… You know.

CHEESE. Oh god, how I’ll miss you.

I’ll go check it out. I keep forgetting to add her to my reader, so now would be a good time!

By about day 5 of the shred your body will start to get used to it and you start to kinda like the pain your body is experiencing.

I’m excited about In It To Gym It. And I totally want to go to vegas!

    Good luck with vegan diet.

Bloggers in Sin City! You should join us. I added the link above.

Thanks. I have no trouble going vegetarian, really. But the dairy will be HARD.

I just laughed reallllly loud at Travis’s comment. Alright i’m hopping on board with this thing. I know I’ve gone a long way so far in losing weight and what not, but it’s time I focus on toning up. I have saddlebags and loose skin I’ll probably never get rid of, but I’m going to try. I start a Bikram class tonight.

Good luck Shine! I know YOU CAN DO IT! If you ever need someone to vent to about the little bitch that working out can be… just let me know. I’ve been there. believe me.

    • shine says:

You and Sketch are on my “Oh crap I don’t want to work out today” speed dial. Hope that’s okay!

  6. You want vegan recipes? Oh man, I’VE GOT VEGAN RECIPES. I only cook vegan because I don’t use dairy products fast enough for them to stay fresh. That, combined with the fact that the time in my life when I did the most cooking, I was eating vegetarian/vegan to lose weight. Which I did. A ton of it. And then promptly put it all back on before moving to Boston. Le sigh.

    Anyway, emailing you right now.

  7. I love this idea!

And I have the Jillian Michael Shred, as well as some of the other Biggest Loser trainer workouts. I have to say that I cannot stand J.M, so I tend to get Bob’s workout. I just bought his 6 week boot camp. And you know what? To show you my support by doing that DVD every day for the next 30 days. Starting tomorrow :-) I just woke up about an hour ago and am already late for some plans.

    You can do it!

Oh, I HATE Jillian. But somehow, it helps to hate her while I’m working out.

Awesome. Check out In It To Gym It. See if you might want to join up!

  8. I’m so excited you’re going vegan for a month! More than anything, I can’t wait to hear about how awesome you feel. It really is amazing how much we can control the way we feel with food. Exercise is definitely important too, so all around I am very happy for you and will support any way I can!

P.S. Um, I haven’t seen you in, like two weeks. The eff?

It really is. And I know that I’ll never end up totally vegan. I have too much love for fish and cheese. But I think my body needs a break. So I’m going to listen and give it one.

      P.S. Let’s make a plan, ma’am!

  9. Tatiana says:

Well congrats! For the record I’ve struggled with my weight only since birth control made it into my life like the necessary evil it is, but this year I got pissed off enough to get back in shape too.

Never one to workout easy when it can be done hard, I picked up P90X and went to town – first round I swore a lot, built some decent uppper body muscle and lost about 15 lbs. Now I’m onto round 2 – need to repeat the same accomplishment and I’ll be beach ready. It’s hard work, but totally worth it. And don’t worry, personalities aren’t that easy to get rid of. :)

    • shine says:

Yeah, I curse Jillian every second. But I think it’s going to be worth it. Birth control is a bitch…but totally necessary. I hate that it helps us gain.

Yeah, I joined too. My fat booty needs it. But then I ate a row of brownies. Now I have to do a Crunch video…. I hate you all.

    • shine says:

Psh, please. I have to go Shred with Jillian even though I can barely lift my arms. And I didn’t even eat brownies.

  13. Pecosa says:

Wow, now THAT is commitment. I’m scared to even think about giving up dairy even though I know it makes me sick.

Good luck on your Shred…it gets easier after the first week. Promise.

  14. Jenny says:

I’m a student so I am practically vegan because it’s a lot cheaper (OK, so I have milk in my tea and very occasionally I buy eggs, but).

I do a lot of chinese and indian style cooking and once survived nearly a whole term on ‘lentils and shit’. Basically the original recipe was: cook some green lentils. Meanwhile fry an onion and a pepper in ginger and soy sauce (and oil natch). Mix together, add any other flavouring you can think of that would work, eat. Sounds boring but it’s actually slightly addictive. Me being me I was soon doing this with all kinds of different spices and vegetables (brocolli, cinnamon and tomato in lentils, anyone? seriously) and actually it’s really good. And simple.

I’m also famous for ‘everything in the fridge curry’, which basically means frying all the veg you can find in a really small amount of olive oil with a bit of curry powder/other curry spices, then adding tinned tomatoes or stock or something and letting it simmer until all the veg is cooked through. Serve with wholegrain rice.

Pitta breads don’t have eggs in them and make a great lunch dipped in hummus or salsa or whatever with some carrot sticks or whatever on the side.

And yeah, being vegan or whatever is cheaper – so when it gets hard, work out how much money you’re saving and use that to treat yourself to a trip to the cinema or something.

    Good luck! xx

    • shine says:

Excellent! Thanks. I swear, I have the best readers and blog friends! I don’t think I’ve ever actually eaten a lentil, but I’ll give it a whirl.

You are DREAMING if you think I’m posting the scary swimsuit pictures I took. DREAMING.

And sshhhh! Don’t tell. I don’t want to get arrested for being a vegan for a month.

  17. Toe says:

Good luck on the workout and diet. I totally need to do something to and InItToGymIt sounds like a great motivation booster.

There’s always egg free pasta! I know I just totally ruined your vegan diet with that.

    • shine says:

Yeah, the thing is…I’m sort of nervous about WHAT the egg is replaced with and since the goal is to get all the super processed chemical crap out of my body, I’m going to try to stick with fresh fruits, veggies, and beans. And rice. Because I love rice.

  18. Good luck with the whole vegan thing. Seriously. Good luck. I could never do it. I love beef too much!

I have actually commented before, but I wanted to give a shout out to a food supplement I take since I’ve started this crazy routine – it’s got the lovely mouthful of a name – Vega Whole Foods Health Optimizer and it’s full of vegan protein, ALL your vitamins and minerals, probiotics, seaweed, maca root and stuff I’ve never even heard of, developed by a vegan triathlete no less.

Anyhow, it helps me heal better, sleep less and in general seems to be a miracle cure. Tastes a bit like garbage though, so I’d get the individual servings to try and see if it does anything for you. You CAN add it to a smoothie if you’re not lazy though, that would help with the taste thing.

    • shine says:

Hmmm…I’ll check that out. But I don’t generally do well with things that taste like garbage.
